IT CAN BE DONE The production of food ingredients such as emulsifier and stabilizer blends is a highly energy-intensive operation. Despite this, in 2015, our Danish plant became CO2-neutral*. It’s a vital milestone on our road to attaining a zero carbon footprint encompassing all facilities worldwide by 2020. To do it, we examined every aspect of our operations, fine-tuning wherever possible to minimise energy consumption. In fact, we’ve achieved CO2 emission reductions since 2006, amounting to 16,088 tonnes in 2015 alone. And we have applied ourselves to other sustainability initiatives such as sustainable palm oil supply with equal passion and commitment. For Palsgaard, sustainability is not a choice. It is a founding principle and a business advantage. We will continue striving to set the standard in our industry. Birger Brix Group CEO Schou Foundation Jakob Thøisen CEO Palsgaard A/S * Deloitte has verified that Palsgaard has offset its consolidated CO2 emissions related to electricity consumption and natural gas consumption for the production site in Juelsminde, Denmark in 2015. We have taken a giant step forward for a food ingredients manufacturer of our size: Attaining 100% CO2-neutrality in Denmark during 2015 despite having lifted production volume by over 60% since 2006. WHAT MADE IT POSSIBLE? Corporate social responsibility is built into our founding principles. As a foundation-owned company, we have the freedom and resources to lead our industry in sustainability. WHY WAS DENMARK FIRST? Denmark is a natural starting point for reducing emissions, as the plant at Juelsminde uses the most energy in the group, and here we have access to infrastructure and technologies that are in their infancy in many other parts of the world. IS SUSTAINABILITY GOOD FOR BUSINESS? Sustainability is important for many of Palsgaard’s customers. As a supplier, the company does its best to live up to our customers’ requirements for more sustainable production. The activities the company performs in this area contribute to making us a preferred supplier for many customers, and therefore, sustainable production is not just a cost but also a key business parameter. WHAT IS COVERED? Palsgaard’s CO2-neutrality framework incorporates the principles of the Green House Gas (GHG) Protocol, Scopes 1 and 2, developed by World Resources Institute and World Business Council on Sustainable Development to set the global standard for how to measure, manage, and report greenhouse gas emissions. Company vehicles are not included in Palsgaard’s framework. TARGETING TOMORROW HOW WILL PALSGAARD ATTAIN ITS 2020 TARGET? Going forward, Palsgaard’s target calls for a variety of projects and initiatives in its operations abroad – and to maintain the Danish plant’s 2015 achievement.
